The experience of visiting the courthouse can be extremely stressful, causing concerns of security and wayfinding. At the fore-front of design discussions were creating more visible and identifiable entrances, incorporating daylight and views and making a conscious effort to create more calming, safe place for everyone. Design strategies organized specific programmatic areas within the building to utilize daylight to the North and South and offer opportunities for views of the city. In addition to daylighting, wayfinding was closely examined as an integral part of the Courts’ experience.

Members of the Canary team worked with the architectural team to design a comprehensive wayfinding system for the downtown campus that employed multiple modes of communication. Digital screens are clearly visible after security screening for visitors to immediately find their needed court room; while directories at each elevator lobby are posted for additional reinforcement. Upon arriving on a given floor, color, in conjunction with icons, create easy message comprehension and direction. This strategy of progressive disclosure simplifies decision-making and can help promote clear and safe circulation throughout the building.
