The Next Act

Herberger Theater Center | City of Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ

Originally built in 1989, the Herberger Theater Center fosters growth of the performing arts in Phoenix and contributes to the cultural and educational development of the Valley. In 2006, Phoenix residents passed a Citizen’s Bond to fund infrastructural, accessibility, and aesthetic upgrades to the Herberger Theater Center. Early in the process, it became clear the Theater required more than mere repairs, but a transformation that would reenergize routine patrons, attract new audiences and actively engage downtown Phoenix.

The renovation at Herberger Theater Center needed to restore its position as a jewel of downtown Phoenix, celebrate the theatergoing experience from street to seat and bring the theater dramatics inside-out, connecting the theater to the surrounding downtown Phoenix community. In addition to the architectural renovation led by Gould Evans, the back of house, public spaces, and theaters all received a fresh appearance with new colors, finishes, furniture, and energy-efficient lighting to reflect a timeless beauty. In the Rotunda, a grand entry chandelier, consisting of over 150 low-voltage cast glass globes, has become a new focal point for the theater.

As part of their goals, the Herberger Theater Center wanted to better communicate the presence of its three resident theater companies, as well as the identities of its three venues. Signage elements were located throughout to direct patrons to their desired destination, advertise current performances to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and choreograph a vibrant theatergoing experience. Exterior uplighting and illuminated signage createsa glow by night, further activating the evening streetscape and city connection.
