Warehouse Revival

Gould Evans + Canary 521 Studio | Phoenix, AZ

The Gould Evans + Canary 521 Studio is located in the heart of Phoenix’s downtown warehouse district within a historic paper distribution building.  The renovation sought to maintain the building’s integrity and gritty vibe while allowing for an open and collaborative working environment with breakout areas for small meetings. Among many uninhabited warehouses in the area, the additional challenge in renovating this space was to allow other businesses to envision the possibilities of a work environment within the historic area and drive future economic development.

Furniture and material selection played an important role in establishing a balance between the history of the building and modern office use. Desks are a “benching” system beneficial for open, customizable and modern work spaces and are designed to allow for future growth. A material palette of plywood, raw steel, felt and concrete maintains the warehouse look and feel. The focal point of the building is a central kitchen area and community table that encourages gatherings and reinforces staff collegiality. A custom steel bicycle rack holds office bicycles, which are utilized by employees to navigate the downtown streets for lunch and coffee excursions.

The former loading dock has been transformed into “The Pit”: an all-studio meeting and community engagement space with plywood bench seating. Infilling the garage door openings of the existing loading dock with storefront glazing also enables the company to maintain “street” presence to the west while two existing glass garage doors on the east open to allow airflow into the building. Wood bow trusses were enhanced through silicon blasting, the masonry block was left exposed and the existing concrete floors were preserved – complete with yellow parking stripes, all to maintain the impressive history and character of the building.
